An Unexamined Assumption
At the root of suffering is a simple, unexamined assumption. A belief that we simply take to be true and solid, but proves flimsy upon close examination.
We believe happiness will come once we achieve something: wealth, status, romance, even enlightenment. We don't think fulfillment is possible unless something happens.
This is the assumption that happiness is caused. Which means it is dependent on outcomes and is therefore scarce. In this belief system, happiness is synonymous with pleasure. So we frantically chase fleeting pleasures.
But many mystics suggest this assumption is false. They tell us that happiness is actually uncaused. This means happiness is not dependent on outcomes nor is it scarce. It's available right now.
The question then is not how do we attain happiness, but rather what is it that blinds us to our natural state of happiness?
When the eye is unobstructed, the result is sight.
When the mind is unobstructed, the result is wisdom.
And when the heart is unobstructed, the result is love and joy.
Welcome to the journey back home.
